The Power of Vulnerability
Teachings of Authenticity, Connection, and Courage
Brené Brown's The Power of Vulnerability encourages readers to embrace vulnerability as a source of strength, fostering deeper relationships, greater self-awareness, and courage to live authentically, promoting personal and emotional growth.
This book is one of my all time favourites. Brene Brown explores the first stages of connecting with yourself. This was the first book I read when I embarked on my own personal growth journey and it proved to be a perfect launch pad. Sophie.
Power
A Woman's Guide to Living and Leading Without Apology
This book provides a transformative path for women to reclaim their power in a world that often strips it away. Through principles like Presence, Ownership, Wisdom, Equality, and Responsibility, Nekvapil offers a framework for women to build internal power, break free from people-pleasing, and lead with authenticity and strength.
I first heard Kemi speak on the podcast "The Imperfects" as I was driving along a country road heading toward what I thought was going to be my newest business venture. That businesses venture didn't eventuate but my fascination and the inspiration I got from Kemi in that podcast lead me to her book which has helped solidify my strength in the reclamation of my life in my own design. Very powerful book (pardon the pun)
Rushing Woman's Syndrome
The Impact of a Never-Ending To-Do List and How to Stay Healthy in Today's Busy World
Libby Weaver addresses the health impacts of constant stress and busyness on women. She explores how the pressure to do it all affects physical and mental well-being and provides strategies to manage stress, improve health, and find balance.
When I read this book for the first time many years ago I skipped to the back of the book searching of the "hot tips summary" of how I calm my busyness. And right there at the back it says "if you're a true rushing woman you would have skipped to the back of this book for the summary". Right then I knew my journey wasn't going to be a quick fix and instead I needed to go alllllllll the way back to the start and rewrite my script. A great book to help with a self audit.
The Myth of Normal
Trauma, Illness, and Healing in a Toxic Culture
This book challenges the conventional understanding of health and normality in modern society. Gabor Maté and Daniel Maté argue that many chronic illnesses are the result of societal and cultural factors, and they call for a more compassionate and comprehensive approach to health and healing.
An intrinsic belief that I hold is the relationship between the physical and emotional health of an individual. I started exploring this space during covid when I was in the depths of anxiety around the ever changing landscape and the impact it was having on my physical health without even having covid. I still hold these beliefs and see it manifest in people around me time and time again. Your body is a barometer for your mind.
Atlas of the Heart
Mapping Meaningful Connection and the Language of Human Experience
Brené Brown explores 87 emotions and experiences that define what it means to be human. The book aims to give readers the language and tools to build meaningful connections by understanding and articulating their emotions and experiences more effectively.
Another brilliant Brene book. This book is a true atlas. It explores ALL the emotions based on tonnes of research. This book gave me some absolute diamonds when it came to my own self reflection and the ability to identify complex emotions in others.
Atomic Habits
An Easy & Proven Way to Build Good Habits & Break Bad Ones
James Clear provides a practical guide to breaking bad habits and building good ones. The book is based on the concept of making small changes, or "atomic habits," which can lead to significant improvements over time. Clear combines scientific research with actionable advice to help readers achieve lasting success.
I always said I wanted to be a 5am woman, to get up and go walking and start my day fresh......but for years and years and years the habit cycle of sleeping late, staying up late watching Netflix and drinking wine kept me stuck in a loop. James Clear's incredibly practical and helpful set of habit breaking tips and habit creating tips meant that I could start to change that cycle and being to move more toward my goals. There have not been plenty of early morning walks but the old habits haven't gone totally, there's still the occasional late night.....
In the Realm of Hungry Ghosts
Close Encounters with Addiction
Gabor Maté explores the nature of addiction through personal stories and scientific research. He examines the root causes of addiction, including trauma and emotional pain, and advocates for compassionate and holistic approaches to treatment and recovery.
I came to this book when I was beginning to evaluate and explore my relationship with alcohol and the impact it was having on my physical and mental health. I was committed to drinking less for my overall wellbeing by I also wanted to understand why it was that I found that so hard. This book has been hugely impactful in that understanding.
Quantum Healing
Exploring the Frontiers of Mind/Body Medicine
Deepak Chopra delves into the concept of quantum healing, which combines principles of quantum physics with traditional medical practices. He discusses how the mindbody connection can influence physical health and promote healing, providing case studies and scientific evidence to support his theories.
This was another "Covid Read" and one that was really easy to read and resonated strongly. It sounds far more "woo woo" than what it actually contains and it's a brilliant book for anyone exploring the relationship between physical pain and mental health.
Mating in Captivity
Unlocking Erotic Intelligence
Esther Perel examines the complexities of maintaining desire and intimacy in long-term relationships. She explores the tension between the need for security and the desire for novelty, offering insights and strategies to rekindle passion and connection.
This was downright one of the best books I've ever read!!!! It fundamentally changed my internal permissions when it came to sex and intimacy. It's practical, sensible and speaks to anyone navigating a long term relationship whilst trying to maintain an intimate relationship that meets both parties needs.
The Seven Spiritual Laws of Success
A Practical Guide to the Fulfillment of Your Dreams
Deepak Chopra outlines seven universal laws that can be applied to achieve success and fulfillment in life. The book blends spiritual wisdom with practical advice, encouraging readers to align their actions with these principles to create a life of abundance and joy.
What hooked me here is the idea that you can follow principles to create a life of abundance and joy.......yes please! This book was another very easy read and it sung to a lot of what I was already exploring and evolving.
Any Ordinary Day
Blindsides, Resilience and What Happens After the Worst Day of Your Life
Leigh Sales investigates how people cope with unexpected life-changing events. Through interviews and personal stories, she explores themes of resilience, survival, and the human capacity to recover and find meaning after traumatic experiences.
The strength and resilience of humans never fails to astound me. How we cope down to a cellular level when faced with the utterly unimaginable. Leigh Sales writes this book superbly and it's a humbling place to start with some self gratitude.
When the Body Says No
The Cost of Hidden Stress
Gabor Maté explores the relationship between stress and disease, arguing that chronic stress can lead to serious health issues. He provides case studies and scientific research to demonstrate how emotional and psychological stress impacts physical health and offers guidance on healing and prevention.
This book was another valuable resource in my exploration of the relationship between mental and physical health. I came to this book in a time of my life that was incredibly stressful with family and business life all at maximum demand, and the sacrifice for that demand, and giving, was me.
Beyond Booze
Beyond Booze: How to create a life you love alcohol-free
The goal isn’t to be sober, the goal is to love yourself so much you don’t need to drink. For decades we have been sold the idea that alcohol is our ‘reward’ at the end of a busy day. Not only do we use it to celebrate and commiserate, but we rely on it to relieve the stress and exhaustion of the daily grind.
Beautifully written incorporating Sarah's own story along with scientific information and very practical tips. I have read a lot of books in this space in my journey to understanding how alcohol impacts mental health and this is the best book I've read so far.....
The Postnatal Depletion Cure
A Complete Guide to Rebuilding Your Health and Reclaiming Your Energy for Mothers of Newborns, Toddlers, and Young Children
Dr. Oscar Serrallach discusses the concept of postnatal depletion, a condition affecting many new mothers. He provides a comprehensive guide to recovery, including dietary advice, lifestyle changes, and medical treatments to help mothers regain their energy and well-being.
Oscar Serrallach is an integrative doctor that I sought to help me with hormone fluctuations and energy after the birth of my third son. Not only did he help but he also taught me a lot about what was happening in my body and why. This has fundamentally helped me in my journey to understand the intricacies of a female body and give myself permission to let that flow naturally.....
